Spaghetti Bolognese

This classic Spaghetti Bolognese is a cozy, comforting dish made with tender ground beef, aromatic vegetables, and a rich tomato-based sauce tossed with perfectly cooked spaghetti. It’s a crowd-pleaser that brings warmth to every bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 small carrot, diced
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 400 grams canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 400 grams spaghetti
  • Freshly grated parmesan cheese for serving
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Set a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat and let it preheat.
  2. Add olive oil, then sauté onion, garlic, carrot, and celery for about 5 minutes until soft and fragrant.
  3. Push the vegetables to the side and add ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart gently.
  4. Stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, beef stock, oregano, and bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper and bring to a boil.
  5. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 30–45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti in salted boiling water until al dente, then drain.
  7. Remove bay leaf from the sauce. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  8. Serve sauce over spaghetti or toss pasta into the sauce to combine.
  9. Top with grated parmesan and fresh herbs if using. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Add a splash of milk to soften the acidity of tomatoes.
  • Use a combination of ground meats for a deeper flavor.
  • The sauce tastes even better the next day.
