Brown Butter Sugar Cookies

These Brown Butter Sugar Cookies combine nutty richness with soft, chewy centers and crisp golden edges. Perfect for holidays or anytime you crave a sweet treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (browned and cooled)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Decorating sugar or sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Brown the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden and nutty, then let it cool for 10 minutes.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the browned butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture until fully combined.
  5. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes. Scoop into tablespoon-sized balls and roll in sugar or sprinkles if using.
  6. Place on baking sheets and bake for 9 to 11 minutes, until edges are golden but centers remain soft.
  7. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough helps prevent spreading and deepens flavor.
  • Use a cookie scoop for evenly sized cookies.
  • Brown the butter carefully to avoid burning it.
